Do People Pass Their AAPC CPC Exam on the First Try, and How Do They Do It?

If you are taking the AAPC CPC exam, then you will at some point ask yourself this question; do people pass their medical coding certification exam on their first try? And how do they do it? Although official figures are hard to come by, rough estimates suggests that only 40% to 50% of exam-takers pass on their first attempt.

The medical coding certification exam is no pushover

Make no mistake, the CPC or Certified Professional Coder certification exam is a grueling marathon of an exam that takes nearly 6 hours long. Medical coding careers and its industry are growing fast because of the federal push for the implementation of electronic health records such as ICD-10. This translates to better salaries and career options, but also mean it is getting more competitive as more people like yourself try to get certified.

But people do pass the CPC certification on the first try or attempt

The good news is that 40% to 50% of people do pass on their first try, and there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to do the same. If you do a simple survey of those who passed on their first try, most will say the exam is tough. You will also find that the common things they all share is that they are well-prepared and have a good amount of previous coding experience. Some do pass without experience but these cases are rare. Almost all of their advice points to the same pattern, which is to:

1. Review the official study guides

2. Get yourself some coaching or online blitz review videos

3. Do plenty of AAPC practice or mock exams

4. Plan and practice your strategies for answering questions and time management

If you fail the exam, you can retake it until you pass

The other thing you might notice from the advice of those who passed is to keep calm and not give up. Those who failed the exam the first time just continued to retake the exam until they passed. Sometimes it takes a few attempts so as long as your scores improve with each attempts then you’re on the right track. If you fail you have one free retake within 12 months, so use the time well to get fully prepared.

Recover fast and learn from your mistakes

Before you retake the exam, it is worth examining what you felt was the problem. The most common complaint is the lack of time to finish answering all the question. Those who passed on their first attempt finished answering all their questions even if they thought it was tough. Based on the many advice out there, it is safe to conclude that perfecting your time management, question answering, and CPT lookup strategies is often the best way to improve your chances other than knowing your topics.

CNA Practise Test

As a student who has just passed and completed your CNA courses, you are now ready to take the official nursing assistant exam which will certify you to be employed as a bona fide nursing assistant. Taking such an important test can be nerve-wracking, however, and even if you have diligently studied, read and re-read your textbooks and other school materials, you may still feel like you are not quite ready to take the nursing exam. Luckily, there are online sources, such as study guides, that you can access in order to prepare better and feel less nervous when taking the test. A CNA practice test is also available online which is a fair representation of the real thing. Many students take advantage of the online CNA practice test, which allows you to examine and answer questions similar in format to the actual questions on the CNA test.

Since CNA certification tests are different according to the state they are regulated by, a site called Pearson VUE is very helpful in that it lists CNA test information according to what a state requires to be included in the test. For example, if you are taking the test in the state of California, then you can look for that state in the drop-down menu which will give you a CNA practice test comparable to the one you will receive in California. This website also has additional educational tools that will help you study for the exam.

The NNAAP Nurse Aide Practice Written Exam Packet is another online site that assists students in passing the certified nursing exam. You will be able to download a 13 page PDF practice exam, along with the answers, which you can take as many times as you want. It also serves as an excellent study guide for the actual test.

You might also search for those “free online classes” that are offered to the public which cover an assortment of subjects, and use the instructional videos they advertise as review for your CNA test. In addition, nursing homes and other long-term health care facilities will sometimes offer free CNA training classes which could further augment your knowledge and help you feel much more confident about being able to pass the CNA exam. Many students admit that it is only the clinical portion of the test which makes them nervous to think about. One way to alleviate this insecurity is to actually practice the fundamental concepts of care-giving on a family member or friend. Obtain a wheelchair somewhere and have your subject pretend to be incapacitated. Practice getting him or her out of the wheelchair properly, placing them correctly into a bed, checking their vital signs; you could even practice the correct procedure regarding bathing a patient (if you know the person well enough!).

Remember that although you might do great on the written part of a CNA practice test, it is the clinical aspects of nursing which the exam supervisors will be observing closely, so don’t neglect procedures of proper patient care. Imagine how you would like to be treated if you were the a patient who was unable to feed or clothe themselves, and show them the compassion and respect you would like to receive.

How to Study for the CPC Exam in a Short Time (Basically, How to Cram for the CPC Exam)

Trying to get certified as a medical coder by passing the CPC exam is a significant investment of your time and money. For some their careers as medical coders are on the line. Whether it’s your first attempt at taking the coding certification exam or not, the fact is that the CPC exam is not easy. In fact, as much as 60% of exam takers will fail. With so much riding on the line on this one exam, how do you cram for the CPC exam?

First of all, don’t expect miracles to happen. Prepare early for the CPC exam so you don’t have to cram last minute. Treat cramming as the final step of your overall study and test preparation, not the beginning. But if you’re going to cram, then read on.

Get yourself organized. If there is a time and place for proper planning and organization, this is it. Chart out how much time you have left and prioritize what you need to work on. Choose a good study technique that you know works for you. Flash cards and mnemonics are fine if you’ve been using it for some time, but this is not the time to start something new. Identify your best style of study, it could be rereading your notes, reviewing summaries, study groups, taking practice exams, or using audio-visual tools.

Also, try to eke out as much time as possible for study and review. Look for time that can be recovered such as waiting for the bus, sitting in the toilet, watching tv, going out for drinks, cooking, and etc. If you find yourself having some idle time but without your notes, then start to quiz yourself to review the information you’ve retained.

The CPC exam is an open-book multiple choice test. If you’re going to cram, then you’ll want to focus on memory recall rather than memory retention. Develop a plan and strategy for time management and looking up your book. You’re allowed to mark it up for easy reference, so make sure you take advantage of that. Look around, ask, or pay someone to show you the proven ways or methods to mark it up. Not all questions are equal when it comes to answering them, but they are worth the same number of points. A major problem that most CPC exam-takers face is not having enough time to finish it, so be efficient.

You can’t pass the CPC exam if you’re not actually in it. Keep yourself fit, mentally and physically. Maintain a positive, confident, and relaxed attitude so you don’t get nervous and choke in the exam hall. Even if you’re doing a cramming marathon, make sure you break it up a bit to have enough rest. Having enough rest is crucial because this is the time when your mind absorb and file away all the information.

It Doesn’t Matter If You Study – How to Take a Test

All of us have been hounded by our parents and teachers to study study study. But all that studying won’t guarantee you a good result on the test. You can study for hours and know all the material but you can still do poorly on the exam. Why is this?

Basically, it boils down to how well you can take a test. For example, my sister is much better than I am at math. In fact, she has a degree in Aerospace Engineering. My sister is a rocket scientist. And yet, when we took the SAT, I did better in the math section.

I’m definitely not better than she is at math. So why did she not do as well?

The answer lies in how well you take tests.

You can study all you want, but unless you learn how to take a test, you will never realize your full potential and a lot of that studying will go to waste.

So, what is the solution? Learn how to take tests! There are a lot of resources out there for learning how to study. There are websites chock-full of information that can help you learn more than you ever thought possible. But that’s not what you’re looking for.

Let me share with you a tip on test taking. This is something you do before the test. Go up to the teacher or professor and ask, “What exactly should I anticipate for the test?” It seems obvious, but it can go a long way. Use whatever information your instructor gives you – it will put you that much more ahead than you were before. It could be something big or it could be something little. Whatever it is, use it!

Some might say that this is just working the system but it isn’t. And some might say that just doing this won’t get you very far and they are right. There are a myriad of other tips and tricks you can use both before and during the test. Don’t get me wrong; you still need to study! But if you study poorly or study without keeping the test in mind, you will not do well on the test. Same as if you don’t understand how to take a test. Granted, you will learn a lot, but the grade you get won’t reflect all that knowledge.

I suppose the point is not to let all your studying go to waste. Learn how to take a test, then learn how to study for a test. Then, when you do study and learn things, all that knowledge in your noggin is going to come out on paper much, much better.

Tips to Studying for Your LSAT Testing

Preparing for LSAT testing is they key to being accepted into any law school. The LSAT is the Law School Admission Test. The test is a half-day standardized test that is required for admission into all ABA-approved law schools. The test allows schools to determine the reading and verbal reasoning skills that are required for law school.

The Law School Admission Council provides several resources to prospective students. Their website provides many forms and information for preparing for the test. There are several websites on the Internet that provide information on preparing for the LSAT. There are also classroom courses that are prepared specifically for the test. These classroom courses provide lectures over the material and then students are required to answer questions concerning the lectures. Students should also explore private tutoring, online courses and small group tutoring.

Many advisors say that it is better to practice for the LSAT rather than study for the test. The test consists of several sections that test your logic and reasoning skills. These skills work best from practice rather than studying. There are several websites that are available to students with practice tests. These will be essential in sections such as the analytical reasoning section.

Students will also want to develop a test-taking strategy. The exam is timed and you know what the scoring is based on. Students should answer all questions, even if they don’t know the answer it is still better to guess. Students will also want to invest in some study materials such as LSAT books and CD-ROMS. The only area that students may want to study on is vocabulary. Most of the sections on the test are based on reading comprehension and expanding your knowledge of vocabulary may help you on the test.

Practice, practice, practice. Do not take the test if you do not feel you are ready. Prepare early enough to take the test so that you will not be rushed to prepare for it or apply to law school. Students can take the test twice but schools will average the two scores rather than take the highest score. Retaking the test may not work for you in the long run if you do poorly either time.
