Keys To Doing Well On Standardized Tests

If you’re like most people, you probably dread the idea of taking standardized tests or even preparing for them. Whether it is the SAT’s, or a test you take to get into graduate school, it is no fun preparing for those tests. You’ve probably enrolled into a test prep course, which is obviously a good idea. There are a few other things you can do as well which will make the test prep process much easier.

#1: Spend Some Time Each Day Preparing

What I mean by this is to spend time even before your prep course starts. This might involve taking a practice section of the test once each day or learning a new vocabulary word each day. This will help you stay sharp during the test prep course as you will become more conditioned to taking practice tests and studying each day. Effective mental conditioning will be key if you want to do well on standardized tests. It is very easy to get lazy, especially toward the end of the test prep course. Thus, preparing in advance by spending a little time each day will go a long way in building your conditioning so you can pace yourself accordingly.

#2: Be Realistic In Your Expectations And Do Your Best

This is a point that is mentioned in a lot of articles, but it bears mentioning here as well. It’s always important to be realistic whenever you approach a task like this. If you feel like you need a day off because you are tired or exhausted, give yourself the day off and recharge your batteries. It is not mandatory that you memorize every word or that you score a perfect or near perfect result on every practice test. What is important is that you are able to step back, analyze what you did wrong in the process, and be able to think of what you can do to fix the problem. Once you do this, you will be able to relax and do your best.

6 Tips on Preparing for a Crucial Exam

Exams can be extremely stressful, particularly when they’re crucial to your college career. Fortunately, steps can be taken to prepare yourself in advance, so you can don’t have to stress so much during your exams. The following tips are designed to help you prepare for a crucial exam.

• Prepare ahead of time. Look over your notes frequently, so you don’t have to cram a whole semester’s worth of information into your head at the last minute. This will help familiarize you with the terms and boost your confidence by being prepared for the exam ahead of time.

• Take notes. Everybody has their own way of taking notes, so it’s advisable that you do this on your own, rather than borrow somebody else’s notes. Writing down your own notes helps you memorize the material being studied.

• Use tools to review for your test. Highlighters were invented for the purpose of being study aids; going through your notes or textbook and highlighting all the material relevant to the exam can not only help ingrain the material into your brain, but also makes it easier to find later when you go back to study. For things like numbers or mathematical equations, mnemonics may be used.

• Join a study group. This is an excellent way to exchange ideas with fellow students. Joining a study group can help improve your memory, as well as lighten your burden since you have other people there to help.

• Relax. A few days before your crucial exam, try to relax. Take a break from all the studying and go out with your friends, or play a video game in order to relieve some of your stress. This will clear your mind, so it’s not a jumbled mess when the morning of your exams arrive.

• Eat and Sleep Properly. A responsible student never goes out and parties all night right before a big exam. Eating well helps nourish your brain, allowing you to really focus on your studies. Sleep helps your body relax, as well as clear your mind. Although it may seem tempting to pull an all-nighter the night before a big exam, you will be doing yourself a favor by getting a good night’s sleep. If you’re exhausted during the exam, you will have a harder time focusing on the questions, never mind composing accurate, legitimate answers.

When preparing for an exam, it’s important that you make an effort to do well. Don’t slack off or be lazy. Success requires a good amount of hard work, discipline and determination. If you really apply yourself and do your absolute best, then there is no need to worry about failure. Nobody enjoys taking exams, but they are designed for a purpose- to test your skill level. As long as your try your hardest, study, and take care of yourself so you’re in good physical and mental health, then you should have no trouble passing even the most difficult exam in your field of study.

6 Tips to Study Better

As a student I want my study time to be as effective as possible. If you understand how the brain works than you will be a successful learner. That means that cramming should be a thing of the past, study time should be planned on what you need to learn and your environment should be optimized.

The following are the six must do skills you need to study better.

  • Sleep is not optional. It will actually help your brain to store information into long-term memory so you can recall it for an exam or paper. Slow wave sleep happens during the first third of the night, if you miss this time you are missing the time when you take short-term memory consolidate it and put it into long-term memory. Your brain will recall information more effectively from long-term memory
  • A short nap or walk will help you to concentrate. Your brain can only absorb so much information; get up after 45-50 minutes and nap for 20 minutes or go for a walk, this will help you to clear out that short-term memory so it can store more information.
  • If you are studying fact the best time to study is between 3 pm and 5 pm during the day. This is when your brain will learn these pieces of information optimally.
  • If you are learning skills then study between 6 pm and 8 pm. This is the best time for your brain to process skill memory.
  • Clutter is the enemy. Clutter in your study environment or in your sleep environment will distract you. This is true if you have ADD or if you are the average person. It is worth the 10 minutes to declutter your space before you start studying. This does not mean you need to clean the whole house, just try to make the area you are working in organized.
  • Noise or no noise that is personal. Some people are distracted by the least sound, if this is the case white noise such as rain, ocean sounds, or soft music will help decrease distractions. If you find this distracting it might benefit you to be in a quiet place.

Remember that going to school or taking class is a way of reaching your goals and as such you need to make the time and do your best. This is true whether or not the class is for credit or for knowledge. What you want to do is be the most effective person learner while taking the class.

ITEC Exam – Tips on How to Pass

Regardless of what ITEC subject you are studying the exams can be quite a worrying and stressful time for any student. Exam preparation is therefore essential.

I have been teaching ITEC for a number of years and as a result I can offer the following tips on how to pass your exams;

1. Read each question very carefully before answering. This might sound obvious to you but you’d be amazed at the number of students that overlook something on a question. A typical example of this:

Question: Which one of the following is not a function of the Skeletal System?

The “not” is often not seen by students especially if they are stressed and in a panic. Always read the question a couple of times.

2. Because the format of the exam paper is multiple choice questions, these are the type of questions that you should use when revising. Purchase a study guide that has a large set of revision questions and use them consistently throughout your studies to test yourself.

3. Make sure your study guide contains puzzles. Based on my teaching experience completing crossword puzzles is an excellent way for students to retain information. They are designed to be completed over and over again until the student feels confident enough not to look at their notes.

Take plenty of deep breaths before you enter the exam and try not to get yourself in a state. Keep calm and focused. If you follow the above 3 tips passing your ITEC exam may not be as difficult as you think!

Assessment and Psychometric Testing Tips for Corporate Organizations

Everything is digital and on-line now! From buying apartments and villas to groceries, in a digital world, few things need to be done in person. In such a scenario, why should the hiring process of employees of a firm be out-dated? Today, assessing applicant is completed even before even going through his resume. Such an inspection/glimpse into the applicant’s inner thoughts is known as Psychometric testing.

As the name suggests, it provides psychological inputs into the mental and emotional processes of the applicant. It not only includes aptitude and numerical questions, but is a full package of verbal, numerical, abstract, reasoning and personality-related questions, which closely evaluate whether the applicant is appropriate for the particular job type or not.

Personality tests are not intended to judge the candidate’s knowledge. They help to reveal aspects of character and psychological structure, in order to verify whether the person is suitable for the specific job. If not, the person may be perfectly suited for another. It all depends on the job requirements that are in question.

The main advantages of these tests are that they can be conducted and taken from anywhere; relatively more candidates can participate, without overloading the HR team, as they only have to schedule to meet candidates that passed the test.

Employees are the backbone of every organization. Each organization is also looking for the best. And to get the best, an overall personality examination is required. However a person cannot be judged solely on numerical problems or reasoning. Many people who do have a high level of expertise in this area fail in reality. Numerical expertise does not indicate anything about the person’s expertise in tackling real pressure.

Online Psychometric testing gives organization insights into the applicant’s mind. The employer can gain information into this from a distance, as the results portray the candidate’s thinking and problem handling approach. One can easily test whether the person applying for the job will be able to cope with the pressure and workload or not. This lets the organization gauge the strengths/weakness, pressure-handling ability, etc. of an applicant which otherwise may not directly be available to them.

A person should be alert while applying for any job, gather entire information regarding job profile and the corporate environment he/she is applying for. To succeed in the psychometric test, candidates should first analyze strengths and weaknesses, improve their comprehension skills, and build their team player qualities.

The main three qualities that candidates are tested on are:

1. Competence: measured by an aptitude test. This is to assess the numerical and reasoning skills of the applicant. However, being a topper on it doesn’t affect the overall score.

2. Emotional intelligence: To check the candidate’s state of mind in particular situations where emotional aspects are high. This depicts whether emotional issues will cloud decision-making and whether this will be beneficial for the organization or not. It gauges one’s interpersonal and intra-personal qualities.

3. Ethics: which not only determines whether the person is trustworthy/conscientious/punctual regarding work, but also if he is compatible with the organization’s environment, values and culture.

Candidates can ensure success by preparing in advance. Although assessment techniques depend on which organization and job role you are applying for, some groundwork to brace are required.

Tests like the In-Tray assessment may be given, where you are asked to demonstrate the real life objects you are going to encounter while working. Role Playing, where the applicant is put into different, challenging and crucial situations to check efficiency and stable mind set. Psychometric test, to check technical skills, personality, verbal and logical reasoning, problem solving approach and many more.

Finally, one should brush up on two very important skills: one’s communication skills and dialog delivery. Many organizations often ask candidates to give a group or individual presentation, in order to check verbal fluency and confidence. After being fully assured of the candidate’s suitability, the organization may provide the person with the job in question.

To discover the one who is best suited for the job, different assessments and psychological tests are necessary. Unlike other general on-line tests, psychometric testing doesn’t only check knowledge, but also suitability for a particular job and organization.
